Boise Water Quality Spotlight: Fluoride, Chlorine, Heavy Metals & Chemicals

Water is water right? Not really. There are major differences between water found in a stream (and many kitchen sinks!) and water that has been properly treated. For example, tap water contains unmeasured amounts of fluoride, chlorine, heavy metals, chemicals and medicines. A fear of the unknown is especially justified in this situation, since so many homeowners use tap water for all sorts of purposes in the house, such as cooking, cleaning, and bathing. To break down the harmful effects of tap water even more, here is what each bad component of water does:

  • Fluoride - Chronic consumption of fluoridated water can lead to a condition known as skeletal fluorosis, whose symptoms are not unlike arthritis.
  • Chlorine - According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, the cancer risk to people who drink chlorinated water is 93 percent higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.
  • Heavy metals - These include copper, lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium. Consumption of these metals can lead to organ damage, cancer, nervous system damage, reduced growth and development, and in extreme cases autoimmunity.
  • Chemicals & Medicines - Hormones, pesticides, and nitrates to name a few, or as they are also known as, “things you shouldn’t be drinking.”

Clearly, these components of water are unfit for consumption, let alone used for washing and bathing. However, perhaps the scariest fact as of yet is that these traces are all unmeasured in tap water, meaning that the levels of each can vary widely. With such a big red flag attached to your tap water, it can be easy to become overwhelmed.

However, fear not as there are indeed ways to remove all those harmful substances from your water. By softening, purifying, and filtering, your home’s water can be clean and healthy for all your daily needs.
